Why is my website not showing up on Google?
Short answer: it's almost always one of four problems: Google is blocked, the site isn't indexed yet, your Google Business Profile isn't linked right, or there's nothing on the page worth ranking. Work through this checklist in order; each step takes a couple of minutes and costs nothing.
-
Search for the site directly.
Google
site:yourdomain.com(with your actual domain). If pages appear, you're indexed and your problem is ranking, not visibility; skip to step 4. If nothing appears, keep going. -
Check whether Google is being told to stay out.
Two common self-inflicted wounds: a
noindextag left over from development, and a robots.txt that blocks everything. View your homepage's source and search for "noindex"; visityourdomain.com/robots.txtand look for "Disallow: /". Site builders often ship with a "hide from search engines" toggle quietly on; it's one of the most common causes in Shopify's own community threads. - Ask Google to look. Set up the free Google Search Console, submit your sitemap, and request indexing for your homepage. New sites aren't found instantly; indexing typically takes days to a few weeks, and a brand-new domain with no links pointing at it is last in line.
- Check your Google Business Profile. For local searches, the map results come from your Business Profile, not your website, and the two reinforce each other. Make sure the profile exists, is verified, links to your actual website (a Facebook page won't do; Google removes social links from the website field), and shows the same name, address, and phone number as your site footer.
- Ask what the page gives Google to work with. If your whole site is a logo, three photos, and "quality service since 2009," there's nothing to rank. Every service you offer and every area you serve should be named in real text on the page. This is the step where most "my competitor shows up and I don't" cases are actually decided.
When it's not you
Sometimes the diagnosis is that the site was built wrong: no titles, no text Google can read, or a builder subdomain you never owned. If you paid for a site and it fails steps 1–2, the person who built it left the job unfinished. Our $100/month plan exists partly because of these calls: the basics on this checklist (indexing, sitemap, Business Profile consistency, real service pages) are handled by default, not sold as an SEO add-on.
